i think it has to do with the ratio of bore and stroke in the engine. in an oversquare engine (small stroke, large bore) you get a lower revving but more toruqey engine than an undersquare one.


OVER SQUARE IS--- LONG STROKE SMALL BORE

UNDER SQUARE IS---SHORT STROKE LARGE BORE

under square engines rev freely making their power from high revs

over square engines cant rev freely and make thier power from the longer stroke producing more torque from having more expansion time in the cylender
