get yourself a MIG for sure, they're great. they make anybody a pro with only a little bit of practice. frankly i think it's a great idea to teach yourself to weld, when you do you'll wish you did ages ago. as far as buying the mig itself, you definitely want the highest current rating possible (try and get something over 200A) for the budget, but other than that if you wont be using it much you may as well get the cheapest one you can find.
