For a less nerve racking introduction to motorsport, I'd suggest long course motorkhanas - you get to push your car as hard as you like or it will allow, there's plenty of time to think about how you're driving as you watch other people drive the same course (also a great way to pick up driving tips by watching people who are faster than you), and you can do it in a standard street car if you wish, with the only real regulation being that you must be wear full length clothes while driving.
