What do you mean by short gearboxes?
On my car:
1st....upto 25km/h (this is when I change coz the torque & power are dropping off - about 4000rpm)
2nd.... 50km/h
3rd.... 85km/h
4th.... 130km/h
5th....
My car only pulls 2400rpm in 5th at 100km/h, petrol model is at 3000rpm.
The lower gears are shorter than petrol ones, but diff ratio is way taller (I've got no idea what mine is as no owners manual) & the only reason diesels change gear early is because the power & torque are dropping off.
My car: peak torque of 200Nm at the wheels at 2400rpm, peak power of 49.5kW at the wheels at 3800rpm.
NOS would probably extend the rev range, as diesels have a very limited usable range due having to push against 24:1 compression ratio, and in my case 12psi of boost.
