Hi mate-the turbo has been on two engines-one being a pretty wild 5ME 2.8L(forgies, 292deg cam, race ported head etc etc) and the other a 4.5L petrol landcruiser engine. The response on the 2.8 was a little laggy, however that wasn't due only to the blower-It was also caused by the fact the compression was down around 7.5:1 and the cam didn't start working till around 3000. (at the drags I nearly hit 8000 rpm in first because once it boosted up and came on cam it was awesome).
(response on the 4.5 L cruiser motor was wicked though-boost off idle..........=-)
The car would come on like a light switch at about 3000 and from there it was a hang-on type of ride till the 7500rev limit.
Having learned a series of lessons with that set-up and a few others since, with a bit of thought put into the install I'd think you could get the smaller capacity 1JZ spooling up in the mid twos. Make use of the split pulse housing by using a split pulse manifold and spool-up will be greatly reduced. Also, a boost controller will bring the boost on a lot faster.
Thinking logically, it'd be wrong to say that such a set up would have brilliant response-you're dealing with pretty large turbo here, however, care in the install will give you a package with reasonable response. HOWEVER, whist the response may be average, once it kicks in it will truly blow your socks off. On a rolling start with anything more than 3000 rpm on board in any gear you won't come up against a lot of competition...........
You'd certainly get close to your power target, and for a lot less than buying a GT series turbo-Even when I had this built it cost a bit. The original turbo cost $300, the rebuild cost $1600 (the only original parts left were the exhaust housing and compressor backplate-everything else was new-shaft, cover, bearings, core, wheel, heat shield) and the freshen up It just had prior to sale was $300. (freshen up was purely for sale purposes-so it'd be in as new condition for a buyer)
I'm only ditching it because I've found a Trust TD07 capable of 600hp for the right price that will be able to feed the 4.5L cruiser motor all the air it wants.
Anyway
take it easy
Sean
