Oil catch cans can be situated wherever you want in the engine bay, most people just put it whereever they have the most space and easiest runs of hose. There isn't an "in/out" hose situation generally, its just two hoses running (one from each rocker cover) into the top of the can, some of this flash fancy wancy expensive cans have an out at the bottom (or halfway up) where the residing oil can dump itself back into the sump somewhere, but yeah... I wouldn't know about that 
Generally speaking (and bearing in mind all I've ever done in the past is cabletied a bottle in the corner of the bay with my hoses going into it) you mount it wherever you want, run your two hoses to it, and empty it when it gets full... if it gets full too quickly then you need to consider how toasted your rings and/or valve seats are
