to measure lift with verniers you have some stands to put the cam on, sort of like a thick peice of steel with a V cut out of the top for the cam to sit in, you have one at each end of the cam, they must be the same height. then you just centre the guage on the back of the lobe and turn the cam. its handy if you got the proper stands for the cam bust most ppl/workshops dont.
