The TA-22 has the forward shifter position and so they have the gearstick going straight into the selectors, rather than the later type that the AE-86 uses, which has the gearstick going into a remote linkage and that transfers the motion of the gearstick unside-down into the selectors.
That's why a TA-22 T-50 feels better to shift than an AE-86 box.
