As far as strength goes, as Bill said both boxes appear to have the same size/strength gearset, but the AE86/71 does have a bigger diameter input shaft bearing, and its roller bearing, not conventional ball bearing like the '22.
I have 'damaged' the input shaft bearing on two TA22/T18 boxes with the smaller bearing, but never damaged the one in my AE71 box (with a turbo 4AG)
