My MA61 has extractors running in to 2 1/2" stainless steel all the way thru to a Magnaflow muffler (2 1/2" in 4" out). Not suprisingly, it was too loud and backfired a lot. I chucked on a resonator and it quietened down a bit but still had a very nice chunky note and was below the legal limit. Got rid of the backfire too (bit of backpressure).
As for performance, I couldn't tell you because I bought the car how it is (minus resonator) and needed to put the resonator on for roadworthy purposes. Haven't been pulled over yet either.
