You really do want to try to have the nut cracked before taking the strut out. That way you can drive off to a mechanic to undo it. You can do it straight back up and drive home, just the initial cracking is friggin' hard as it was propably done up in the factory, or replaced by a mechainc and done up with a rattle gun.
