Yeah, my mate with a Silvia just did this so he could fit the piping for his intercooler.
He got a big K&N filter, and put it where his air-box used to be. He used the old intercooler vent to fill the compartment with cold air. Then he drilled 1.5" round holes in the base where the airbox used to be so the air could get to it.
He went to Clark Rubber and got some high-density foam, like the stuff in camping mats, and used it to perfectly seal off the filter and the cold-air from the rest of the engine bay. He did a REALLY good job, I should take some pics of it some time.
His car, coupled with the new IC and more direct piping, plus the cold-air and pod filter is absolutely hauling arse! The pod makes an awesome induction sound too!
