I dont know if you can see it, but in this pic:

The bearing is a parallelogram in section but spherical in depth. As i understand it this can go a long way to eliminating the pressure on only one point on the bearing, as it spins only in as single axis. Theoretically only having a single point will cause a flatspot on that point and stuff the bearing faster.
Hence having the "square" (for want of a better term) bearing is a stress relief point.
