Okay, sorta like how your radiator works, water passes through your heatercore(tiny version of ur rad). When you slide your temperature control thing, you are actually opening a tap to allow hot water to enter this heat exchanger. Air pushes thru it and BAM! Hot air is made . Hence why you will notice why your heater doesnt work when the engine is cold.
Quite often the tap will jam or get stuck due to corrosion. I'm pretty sure its only made of copper or brass. Other things that may cause it to not produce heat is the heater core is clogged and sometimes just the rubber hoses are clogged.
You should be able to see two rubber hoses connecting to tubes on your firewall (thing that seperates you from the engine bay). Try squeezing the hoses when the car isnt running and preferably cold. If it feels/sounds crunchy, then the tap or something else has corroded and you need to open her up.
Christ I maybe wrong, someone please tell me I'm right
