I was in Melbourne a few days ago, and was lucky enough to meet up with that friend of mine who fitted the 1UZ-FE four litre quad-cam V-8 into his AE-86.
The engine is basically stock apart from some well-made home-built extractors and a Motec to run it. He reckons it's aboug 300hp, and it'd be at least that.
Anyway, I knew it would be pretty darn quick but I wasn't prepared for just how fast it would be!!!!
We pulled away from the curbing, and he hit it in 1st, breaking into wheelspin. Picking 2nd gear didn't help as it spun the rear tyres almost all the time as well. 3rd gear was much better, with only a second or so of wheelspin before getting traction and then feeling a mighty hand pushing me back into the seat.
Very hard indeed.
He briefly picked 4th gear - again with a goodly chirp of tyres spinning - but we were running out of road quickly so a hefty stop was neeeded.
Oh yes, it stops as well! he's got some very large Celica brakes on it so the stopping power matches the GO power.
Round the first corner, then the same again through the gears.
A couple of corners later - and slower! - we came up to a typical 90° corner. The car was in 5th gear, but he didn't bother to change down, he just went around the corner at about 700rpm, then pulled away without any effort or complaint at all. When the engine was up at about 1500rpm, that familiar urge was starting to build up noticably again.
It's a little nose heavy with that big engine stuffed into the front, but the straight-line performance makes it just a HUGE amount of fun.
FWIW, bigger cams & a vastly more efficient inlet manifold have been talked about .....
