It isn't a part of running in an engine I can say that much for sure. As for your running rich problem...it can be bazillions of things unfortunately Check all vacuum hoses for starters. I would check the VSVs - two ones on the underside of the intake manifold (Idle VSV and T-VIS VSV). Check for ECU error codes, check the fuel pressure in the fuel rail (probably have to get a mechanic to check that one). It's basically a matter of checking everything related to tuning the engine...timing, spark etc etc! Loom plugs going into the wrong hole is uncommon, but they can get unstuck if they are poorly handled (they go very hard after 15 years and tend to break). Your injectors could be stuffed, your EGO sensor could be stuffed. The list is huge...my car is running rich at the moment and I still haven't figured it out (although, I haven't tried to hard to find out why, it's not running badly, just overly rich up top).
