The boots are fairly cheap (the $20 mentioned above seems right from memory) and its piss easy to do yourself.
Two things to note from expierence are, dont use the grease you get with the boot (unless its a genuine boot) try to get some good CV grease. Also, if any dirt has got into the cv, then it will die sooner rather than later one the damage is done. If possible when you have the CV off the drive shaft to replace the boot, clean it all throughly and regrease with some good CV grease. This will help prolong the life of the CV after a boot has split.
