Well you have two options IMHO...

1, you can buy another second hand engine and hope it stays together without any attention for a while (not very likely especially if its been sitting for a while and the seals have dried up) so it wont cost more money when you need to fix that one too.

or

2, pull it out and do a full rebuild while youre at it, if you plan to keep the car for a whil;e this is the best option, dont worry about using toyota gasket kits (I think youll find theyre a lot more than $90 ), theyre way overpriced in comparison to other suppliers and if you really want to go cheap you can make most of them yourself pretty easily while youre waiting for the block to be cleaned etc.

Should I replace head studs? (daily driver, not a track warrior)

its not really necessary but recommended just have a close look at the bolts to make sure theyre not *too* stretched and they should be fine, ive never replaced a set yet nad have had no complaints from the people Ive done rebuilds for or from my own engines ( touching lots of wood!! Smile )

What is a possible cause of this HG failure, given that the engine is still perfectly drivable with no noticable loss of compression?

this is very hard to answer without pulling it all apart and looking at it, it could be anything from head deterioration to a fine leak that has got worse over time in the gasket or just general wear

that depends how much it overheated or if that was the cause in the first place..I generally get the head skimmed as a precaution, and if it needs it the block as well, as for replacing the head itd probhably work out better to get your head re-cod. than waste money on another head which may also be warped.

that depends on the quality of the servicing youve given your car over the years, if its just had tap water thrown about then yes you may find you need to do some repairs, I know of a good place to get it done if this shows to be the case.

personally Id do the bottom end while its all apart, its not really much more work and a set of bearings is only about $80, you could even go to a bigger piston and get a rebore for a bit more comp ( I think theres a set for sale on the forums at the moment that have even been balanced? )if you wanted to while you were at it, at least you would know that the compression will be good afterwards where as a heat stressed block could have lost some of its compression, the bores should be checked for round while the heads off in any case. Plus if you buy a full gasket kit (not VRS) then you will have everything you need in terms of gaskets to do it anyhow.
