The porting is near on identical. The only difference is the output has one extra bolt in the flange. And unless you are running extreme conditions, I doubt it will blow off/warp the flange.

See picture 2, you turn it one way the air is pushed a certain direction, turn it the other way, the air goes the other way.
It is only when you get into twisted rotor, telfon tipped rotors (like the 6/71, 8/71 competition blowers) you might have problems. But I dont know enough about these to speculate
*EDIT*
Anyway, the porting on the large blowers makes it impracticle to reverse the rotation, but this is getting away from the topic.
