yeah, start with the disasterous things first... like checking the crank pulley torque. missing cyls can go for a while with damaging anything. crank pulleys cannot.

also check your oil level and pressure (big end bearing)

engine and gearbox mounts

radiator fan mounts
water pump
alternator bearings

also, try the "piece of hose in ear" trick, see if you can localise the sound a bit better
