The reason that I use a scraper is that it can be used to remove the high points with pin-point accuracy very quickly, polishing second.

There was a time when white metal bearings were all hand scraped.

I am with Ed for the rest of it though - polish it so that the lifters move nicely, assemble it and do not worry about it again.
