I've also read that there is a small resonator box near or as part of the airbox, can this safely be removed? Does it need to be removed? I'm guessing this kind of mod is going to reduce fuel efficiency, give increased throttle response and a nice induction noise?
It (the airbox) is mainly designed to reduce noise (NVH type stuff) from the intake, removing it may increase intake flow a bit, but it won't improve immediate throttle response (at least down low anyway). Removing the airbox and doing a CAI will improve flow - marginally - and also reduce the temperature of the intake charge which can be good for top end power if you tune the engine properly. It will affect fuel economy because it does help (sometimes) to have a slightly warm intake charge to help the combustion - technically it will make your emissions worse too. Changing intake charge temperatures affects the equillibrium point of all the emissions stuff, I think you get higher NOx emissions, I'd have to look it up sorry
