I'm not sure about the RA23, but on the MA61 analogue instrument cluster there are a couple of 'spare' indicator lamp places (down near the handbrake & brake lights). All I need to get is the check engine lamp transfer (ie the little picture that sits in front of the lamp) out of a younger car, stick it over the spare lamp, wire it up and I then hava a functional check engine lamp. If you want to take it further, you could look at one of these http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/techtom/index.htm l , although I don't know if they are available for the 1G.
