try using ball joint splitters, there is Y shaped fork type ones, that you wack with a hammer between the gab, and then there is pullers which have a center which rests on the end of the thread and claws that go around the tie rod end and just wind it in.
Another trick ive used a few times is jacks, jacking it up such that the weight of the car is on the component, sometimes works. also wacking the side of the ball joint to try dislodge the taper.
may be of a little help.
Also i think you are refering to the 'idle arm'
