thermal wrap melts at about 600-700 degrees C
if you get the manifold/turbo/pipes above this (e.g. red hot) for a reasonable amount of time (like i did) you turn the wrap into glass
looks pretty neato afterwards but the actual event is kind of frightening
rather than shield the pipe, shield the sensitive stuff?
