It causes more heat to be generated as the fluid is pumped and smashed back in the right rotation. Heat, I believe, is labelled as the number 1 killer of Auto's

Yes it is, so is throwing it back gears as GIN51E mentioned, or it constantly shifting in hilly area's because people just CBF'd turning off overdrive. Personally, I always leave off overdrive until the engine is warmed up properly, and always turn if off in hilly areas.
But you'll find that if you get an oil cooler for it, it should extend the life considerably. Plus changing fluid every two engine oil changes helps too, as well as making sure there is enough fluid.
