Yeah, I'd considered that. It looks like I can pick one up for around $1000 - $1500, but the fact it's a truck engine is also appealing to me - the the idea of an engine designed to >700,000ks is comforting 
I was planning on getting the older one, I think it was early 70s when they changed it over?
I'm more inclined to believe you if you've done it, but my mechanic said that the performance was pretty good - ie, you could usually start off in 2nd as if it was first etc. Does anyone have a figure on the power of the 5r? I figured with the weight of the car being 900 and the 5r being 79kW@5200 (according to http://www.reanimotion.com/ToyMods/EngineSpecs.htm) it wouldnt be too bad, considering my ratshit VN calais is ~112kW and weighs twice as much...
