I did it today, jacked up the car, undid all the bolts/screws, popped the shield out and had a look. Your idea is great. And yes, that area just behind the mudflap collected a heap of leaves & crap. Tends to do that on other cars too.
First I thought I would have to do it on the driver's side though, as on the passenger side there is big heater box etc in the way. I did a test run popping the grommet aside and the cable came out in the passenger footwell ok so I will go ahead with it this way soon (got distracted by another project today). I tried forcing the cable through the grommet aswell, alongside the factory wiring and it came out eventually but scuffed up the cable a fair bit. I'm a bit paranoid about damaging the insulation on the cable, and don't want to drill out the grommet so am thinking about cutting off some garden hose or something and shoving it alongside the factory cables while I feed the 8gas through. I'm using a maxiblade fused distribution block near the battery to fuse them, hopefully I'll be able to attach it below the ign coil.
