Just bumped into gearbox source. Could be pricey.

Subsection under that addy is: http://www.prbaustralia.com.au/PRBcomposite.htm
When there, browse for gearboxes. You'll find some interesting stuff that can be bolted onto that composite kit-car engine - 4AG !

There seem to be cheaper alternatives too on same page.

I don't know Australian automotive scene. Have you looked into rwd racing shops, what kind 5- or 6-speed H-pattern gearboxes they have on sale. Straight cut gears hardly are favoured for street use. I've heard of gears that have been cut at much shallower angle, thus being quieter and engaging well. That would be ideal for street prepared car enthusiast.

Back to that Volvo issue. Found some limited info at one certain Mazda RX-7 page.

"The front brakes brakes are Nissan skyline 13" discs /cross drilled and cooled and 4 piston calipers mounted on a modified Nissan Cedric Hubs. RR brakes are Volvo 240 standard discs. The rear axle is Dana 30 out of Volvo 240. Why? Since there are readily available and they last easily the 300 HP we intend to have and since parts are extremely cheap. (This rear end is commonly used in Ford Escort rally cars in F-class here.) spicer limited slip, Spicer 5,38 ratio.

Transmission is standard 5-speed (so far, we are looking for a Affordable Turbo gearbox). Prop shaft we plan to use the original heavily modified. Engine we do not know too much about. (I'm shamed to admit)Since it has been built by a Finn living in Canada. he raced RX-7 (Also RX-2/4) there and here. Now he is retiring due to poor health (over 60 years old) and selling his parts and cars."

I hope this gave some new ideas how to approach this dilemma.
