The fork goes between the tie-rod end and the steering arm. You then hit the pickle fork and it spreads apart the joint neatly. Pickle forks should be available from your local auto parts shop. Alternatively, put some sort of pressure on the joint to pull it apart, eg a jack, or a friend with a jimmy bar to lever the joint apart (all that is needed is a strong constant pressure) then belt the side of the steering arm with a reasonably sized hammer (eg medium sized engineer's/ball pein hammer). Obviously undo the nut first... Sometimes a lighter hit on top of the joint helps (while keeping the constant pressure on the joint as above). The best way to do this without damaging the thread is to screw the nut on till it sits flush with the top of the thread then hit the top of the thread/nut with the hammer (not too hard), and make sure you hit it square on.
