I was wondering about this one 'coz I only do that if some idiot has overly-tightened the oil filter...

Seriously dude, hand tightening the oil filter is your friend...

As long as it doesn't leak, then you're set, no need to go psycho on it. Just makes getting it off a PITA. A messy one at that!
