NEVER use an old ring to clean the ring lands/grooves!!!!
cleaning out that carbon buildup in the bottom is only important if the replacement ring is wider and will bottom out & hit that stuff before compressing in the bore.
it is almost Impossible to clean the groove that way Without nicking/scoring/gouging the ring land, and that surface, between the piston & ring, is just as important a sealing surface as the one between the ring & bore.

the wrist pin now Must be removed & lubricated since you've washed dirt/crap/smegma into it with the kerosene.
