Ok DO NOT hit the top of the ball joint with a hammer cause you can severly f*#k the thread on the ball joint and good luck getting the nut back on. To start of with there are 3 ways of seperating ball joints, the simplest and one that requires the least amount of tools is to shock the ball joint out by hitting the sides of the knuckle on the tie rod the the ball joint goes through with 2 hammers on either side at the same time. U can use a fork as previoulsy described above. Or you can use a tool called a ball joint seperator. It has a bolt on one end, and a fork on the other end with a little rod on the other side of the fork. You place the fork in the ball joint and tighten the bolt, the rod puts pressre on the ball joint and pops it out. This is the easiest way and this tool is available at any repco store.
