Component speakers are made up of 3 parts, a tweeter for high frequencies (approx 1kHz thru to 20kHz), a midrange woofer (for the middle range of frequencies: ~90 Hz thru to 1 kHz). The woofer or subwoofer handle the lower frequencies. A Crossover is used so that high frequency sounds are sent to the tweeter, and other sounds sent to the midrange (A crossover usually consists of Hi Pass and a Low Pass filters).

As to which sound better, the components will sound better IF they are installed correctly. As a general rule, tweeters should be aimed as close to the listening position as possible (as short wavelength noise is easily absorbed by objects), midrange must be pointed in your general direction, and for the subwoofer, the sound is almost non-directional so it doesn't matter.

Hope this answers your question. Smile
