apologise for the size... smaller than they were colony of lamellar M23C6 carbides terminating at the high angle boundary of the discontinuous precipitation front. alloy is Fe-25Cr-20Ni. has been nitrided at 1000C for 10 mins than carburised for 40 minutes. has been metallographically polished and then deep-etched with Aqua-Regia (basically nitric and hydrochloric acids) to remove 5 micron depth of alloy, but leav the carbides so they are 3D view. Focused ion beam image of two "electron transparent" regions that were later examined in Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). these areas are about 100 nanometres thick, and were prepared by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) miller FIB image of a large area, prior to thinning for FIB. sample thru thickness here is about 10-15 microns, the flat area is around 50microns wide. to the left is the lamellar carbides of a carburised "pre-nitridation" region. int he middle is finer lamellae of the "displaced nitrogen region". these were formed as Cr2N from the nitrogen displaced by carbon, but were later changed back to CrN and M7C3 by the inwardly diffusing carbon. to the right are carbides that have formed, but failed to continue the discontinuous precipitation mechanism initially established at the nitridation reaction front....
