so i dont set them up as std {both cut outs pointing straight up}??

how would i know how much lift there is at TDC

The dial guage will tell you what lift there is.
Set it up so it works on the bucket and with the valve closed set it to zero then wind the motor/cam over till TDC and see what lift you have.Adjust from there if needed till you get the right numbers.Degree wheel will tell you what the crank is doing so you can back it up with those settings as well.
Or what Stewart said.
Hope that helps.
