Sounds a bit like your getting more voltage out of the coil than the coil is designed to take so it's arcing all over the place.
Have you tested the voltage on the primary ? Maybe it's getting the full 13 or 14 volts while you are driving and needs a balast resistor to drop it and hence drop your secondary voltage that goes tothe spark plugs. Ususally only have full voltage on startup when the starter is sucking heaps of power out of the battery anyway and you need extra voltage on the coil.
