Try replacing the voltage stabilizer in the dash.
It's a 3 pin transformer. I've had this problem before and found that they are very temperamental. I've replaced them only to have them fail again after a few months. If I remember correctly they are at the top of the dash, on the back, around the middle. New ones can be purchased from toyota or if you now the part number you could probably get it from Dick Smith.
