Getting off the line is important in a blue top ae82. A vn or vl can make you look very silly if you miss the start..you dont have the power to recover. The commodores have a lot more power, but I'd say youd keep with a vl..but vn might get you. All depends on the condition of your engine and the comodore your dueling. I've beaten vns in my twin cam but others have had the edge.
The 4age will be a more exciting engine to drive, with heaps more revs , blipping on d/shifts etc. The motors have a prety flat torque curve but the way the rev out is quite nice , plus you'll have better fuel economy and hopefully won't wrap it around a pole as do a lot of commodore drivers (moderately powered RWD)
Just remember ae82s are pretty old now so the safety of the car in a crash is not as good as a newish car, I try and keep this in the back of my mind when I'm giving it a bit.
