I haven’t seen any blow by in my engine, so you probably don't need one. Of course it depends on the age of the engine. I'm still suspicious that the can should be connected to the other side where the outlet from the cam cover goes into the inlet manifold.

Just make sure that the filter can breath properly. I don't think it's a big issue, it may be something a cop notices though.
