 who told you this? All 20V are VVT. It's simple system that advances the intake cam at a set RPM, usually the high end, via a solenoid and oil pressure. The flashing you see is just the ECU coming on and off in order to give the engine more torque when needed then re-adjusting the cam for more power, Ford use the same system Know as VCT.... VVT-i is only seen late model engine ie in the 1ZZ and 3SGE(dual), and VVTL-i 2ZZ. VVT only advances the cam, VVT-i advances AND retards, VVTL-i Advances,retard and varies lift.
Digital, you have Four choices a)rebuild yours, b)Buy a S/T, c)B/T or d)a GZE. A good rebuilt 4AGE 16V using good cams, internal will produce results far better than a stock 20V, A rebuilt 20V can give better results than a 16V but at greater costs, and GZE will either monster or give all these mod engines a good run, depending GZE model, remembering that you'll need to rev the tits off all the other 4AGE just to keep up from a standing start... rip the S/c off and slap a turbo on, all variants will be looking at your tail lights.... find a few guys here and go for a run then make your decision
