Sorry Nark,
But there is at least one more group you should add to the modifiers category...one which, I might add, is probably not overrepresented here. The group to which I refer is one which modifies vehicles closer to their (personal) interpretation of what the car should have been like ex-factory.
In my case, I am in my mid 30's, have two "modified" cars, and have had the mods done (or am in the process thereof) for the above reason primarily, and for reasons of performance etc. secondary.

First car:
KE 70 "XX" Corolla
Mods: 100KW 4AGE, 4-2-1 hand-fabricated extractors into 2/1/2" mandrel-bent exhaust.
car is otherwise completely stock (especially as regards appearance). Net result is a car virtually indistinguishable from simlar Corollas on the road, but with performance which is satisfactory.
Second car:
MX83 Cressida
Engine: 1UZ-FE V8 (Still being wired, but otherwise installed)
Modified stock headers, into 2/1/2" single exhaust system.
Suspension will be upgraded with "performance" springs and shocks
Brakes will remain stock (4-wheel discs) with the addition of metallic pads and DOT 4 fluid
Wheels will be changed for 16" rims, primarily for the better performance characteristics, rather than looks (Otherwise I'd go for 17 or 18" rims)
Again, this my interpretation of the way this car should have left the factory - sort of like a "baby" LS400.

Naturally, neither of these cars will be everyone's "cup of tea", but they will perform as well as, or better than, more modern "contemporaries", whilst remaining cheaper to obtain (and, thus, avoiding the finance pitfalls!)
To the thread originator (trd_celica85), I hope this has been of assistance.

(BTW, for those wanting more info on the Cressida project, I am putting together a website which will include full "coverage" of the project with photos etc).
