More than 100hp/litre from an old-school 8-valve engine is a BIG ask. Yes it can (and has) been done but as indicated above it would be a big-dollar full-house race engine which would be completely useless on the street. That sort of power is easy to get with forced induction, but NA? Forget it.
To answer the original questions:
- Parts availability is variable. Most of the bottom-end parts are interchangeable with 18R-C parts and thus easy to find, but other bits like timing gear which is specific to the DOHC models can be tricky to find. It can take a while to source EFI parts as not many people bothered with fuel-injected 18R-G's; most people took the easy route and used the twin-carb versions.
- Reliability is excellent. As with most R series engines the 18R-GEU is practically indestructible. The long timing chains can be a weak point but provided you replace them at the specified intervals you won't have any problems. The fuel injection system is very simple and when properly maintained will give no trouble.
- Fuel economy is very good if the engine is properly tuned, although there are a lot of poorly-tuned examples out there that get shocking fuel economy. The EFI system has a closed-loop function using an EGO sensor, so highway fuel economy is excellent. Even with the EGO sensor disconnected my 18R-GEU acheived 9L/100km.
