i called it a relay but im not sure exactly what it is called. it was explained to me by my cousin who used to install them. basically it is a small switch that sits just next to the gear stick and can determine if it is in gear or not, or you can get pressure switch types that determine the amount of pressure/force being exerted by the started to try and start the car and if it is above a predetermined amount then it stops trying (these are the old ones, that had alot of failure cause you can imagine how hard the started is turning and by the time it calculates you have usaually broken a few teeth on the starter or flywheel).

as for legality, if you had it in an auto then it is legal and insurable, but in manuals cause of the possibility that the car would jerk/backword in gear then it is not insurable but still legal. although they have made them alot better there is still the potential for the switch to fail and therefore you cannot insure your car if it has it.

as for illegal to have car started while no driver, that is cause you have to leave the car open for that. with the alarms it re-locks the doors once the car has started, basically it unarms and unlocks-stats car-ensures car has started and all is good-relocks doors... after a set time (you set it) the car turns of and the alarm then rearms... while the car is started, if you open the doors then the car switches off, imobilises and the alarm goes off. i used to have these alarms on an old auto my parents used to drive
