To quote an old rally text, 'superstrut' is a new and complicated variation on the MacPherson strut, designed to give almost infinite adjustability and more wheel travel. It has a number of extra links designed to maintain 'perfect' geometry.
TTE mechanics compared it to a set of *bagpipes*. It worked OK on asphalt stages, but the extra bearings in it tended to wear out quickly and stuff the handling.
My guess is that its shorter lifespan is due to these extra bearings wearing out quicker than on a conventional strut.
This set-up debuted on the ST205 and it goes on to say that subsequent development with conventional struts and Ohlins dampers made it a much better handling car.
