That's right but I was and still am under impression that speedo and tacho freezes in new cars when crash happens.


the computer for the airbags will have recorded speed at and prior to triggering, possibly even the engine/trans ECU... but gauges?

why would they? - they're still just a end-mounted needle with a spring to hold it at zero when no eletromechanical force is applied (radially) to the needle.

Only reason for an unpowered gauge like a tach, speedo or fuel guage not to be at zero is a mechanical failure within the guage - not the sudden lack of sensor data due of the engine being violently ripped from the car.

by the time those gauges failed (probably due to massive negative G's from tree-induced deccelaration) the car (or parts there of) were not at previous travelling speed.

And they do make them reasonably durable so they withstand many years of bumpy/poorly maintained roads and dubious driver skill.
