No, the problem was that the oil return from the turbo was positioned too low in the sump (below the oil level), making it difficult for the oil to exit the turbo, so it found its way past the rear seal instead Excess oil flow to the turbo can cause the same problem also, the bearings are only supposed to be fed a contstant trickle of oil to lubricate them, not swim in oil, hence why some setups need a restrictor in the feed line. Worn seals (as opposed to hardened seals) will also cause oil loss/smoking.
