Leverage is your friend. The other option is a cheap rattle gun. Once you use one of these babies, you'll never go back Smile

A sudden shock is better than straining as hard as you can.

And yes you have the right idea locking the crank pulled bolt, but also Blake has the right idea, if you can jam the flywheel with a screwdriver this may be another option. I have always found that the best way is to put a torque wrench on the crank pulled bolt, then a bar on that, and position it such that it is forcing against the side of your engine bay (with a rag protecting it). That means your mate doesn't need to hold it... and can probably get under your car and help push/pull on the other side of the bar you are using.

Always make sure your car is supported very well when putting lots of force into undoing things, as you will be pissed off when you're dead.
