You are asking for three things that contradict here. You want it to be quick but reliable, large but economical. You can't have all of those.

For quick, cheapish and reliable I would get a AE92 Corrolla SX (make sure it's an SX). They have a 1.6ltr 100kw Twin Cam in them (warning, the 4A-FE engine is also twin cam, but sucks). They are rather quick too as they are lightweight and if you don't push them I hear they are fairly economical. Unfortunatly they are FWD. Power to weight is 87kw/ton.

For something slightly less reliable and more costly on fuel, but larger I would go a Nissan Silvia S13 CA18DE or SR20DE non turbo. They are rear wheel drive with 97kw (CA) and 103kw (SR). They are however a Jap import, but there are heaps of them about so parts aren't too hard to come by. Power to weight you are looking at CA: 83kw - SR: 87kw/ton.

Larger again, in sedan format and RWD but with a larger 3.0ltr engine is the Cressida as mentioned. I'm not sure on it's power figures but they should look something like 90kw/ton.

Another option you have is the AE86 Sprinter. You can pick them up for around $3,000. Unfortunately unlike the other cars mentioned in my post they have rear drum breaks, use carburettors rather than fuel injectors, and have a non-crossflow engine. They are however all manual, and RWD. They are also a hatch (or rather lift back) and are expensive for their age. I would advise against getting one unless you love them and plan on upgrading the rear end with discs, and doing an engine swap for a 4A-GE 100kw from an AE92 Corolla SX (or a big port from a JDM spec AW11 or AE86 if you can find one). I must warn you though, messing around with them can be a pain in the ass as Hirogen and I'm sure a few others will inform you. The other option of course is to get a pre-modified Sprinter.
Power to weight you are looking at 50kw/ton with the 4A-C stock engine, or around 90kw/ton with a 4A-GE 100kw from the corolla.
