I would say the free wheeling hubs have been unlocked and the patrol has done a lot of mileage in 2wd this allows the bearings to be stationary and the normal vibration of driving without the bearings turning will cause the bearings to wear into the cups .

Thanks Trevor this theory makes a lot of sense, not to mention twill be an easy fix for us to the the Patrol back on the road.
